Today I’m recommending something a little off the sourcing track I suppose, but it is relevant.  I’d like to recommend Pidgin to anyone who hasn’t totally given up on instant messages.  Pidgin is a multi-chat client for a bunch of different services.   It’s got tons of great plug-ins for all sorts of things, and that’s what  really makes it stick out from similar tools like Trillian, Miranda, and Meebo.  Take a look, check it out, but be sure to look at all the plug-ins.  Oh yeah, and it’s FREE!
